Murgitroyd & Company Wishes You A Happy World IP Day - Let's Celebrate Innovation!

26 April 2012

Murgitroyd & Company invites you to join us in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day today, Thursday 26 April 2012.

World IP Day is celebrated annually on 26 April as this is the date on which the Convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) came into force in 1970.

World IP Day has been celebrated every year since 2000. The aim of this celebration is to raise awareness of intellectual property (IP); to create a greater understanding of how protecting IP promotes creativity and innovation; to celebrate the contribution made by inventors and creators; and to encourage respect for the IP rights of others.

The theme for World IP Day this year is “Visionary Innovators”. On this theme, Director General at WIPO, Francis Gurry commented, “A visionary artist or a composer or a writer is able to show us a different way, a new way of looking at the world”. In the past, Albert Einstein said on the subject, “To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle requires a creative imagination and marks the real advances in science.”

“Visionary Innovators” are often overlooked and not given sufficient credit for the impact their inventions have made on every day life. One such example is Gideon Sundbäck who, on 24 April 2012, would have turned 132 years old. Mr. Sundbäck, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, was the head designer at Universal Fastener. He developed the design of a separable fastener – the zip. To mark his latest birthday, Google changed their homepage to a Google Doodle of a zipper.

Across the globe, events and activities are being held by IP offices, businesses and institutions to mark the day: The Law Society of Scotland and the Faculty of Advocates are hosting a lunchtime conference; The Norwegian Patent Office has planned a morning seminar; and The Brunei Economic Development Board and Baiduri Bank teamed up to organise a poster design competition. These are just a few of the numerous and varied events that will mark World IP Day. To see a full itinerary, click here.

Murgitroyd & Company’s Chief Operations Officer, Gordon Stark, was yesterday interviewed by The Scotsman newspaper to mark World IP Day (see today’s special World IP Day Edition). Gordon commented, in particular, on the drive to innovate being seen in emerging markets and the subsequent pressure that this is placing on more developed markets to innovate to the same level. He also commented on progress towards a unified European Patent and the potential benefits this could have in stimulating innovation across the European area.

Protecting your IP, be it in the form of a patent, a trade mark, copyright or a registered design, can be advantageous to your business in many ways. It doesn’t have to be a complicated, time-consuming and expensive task.
